The third annual Derwood Open took place Monday June 2nd at the Laytonsville Golf Course. It was a tremendous success, topping the previous two years in both golfers and money raised. The weather was ideal for the 88 golfers that played Monday morning; low 80’s with bright sunshine and low humidity.
Along with Mill Creek Parish, the Montgomery Central Derwood Lion’s host the Derwood Open to raise awareness and money for two great causes; the ASP and the Montgomery County Farm Park. The majority of the money raised goes to the ASP or the Appalachia Service Project (www.asphome.org). Every year 15,000 volunteers travel to rural central Appalachia to take part in the Appalachia Service Project (ASP), fixing up homes for low income families. For over 25 years, the youth of Mill Creek Parish have been among them, not only helping the families, but providing an opportunity for mission and growth for the volunteers themselves.
A smaller but substantial donation goes to the Montgomery County Farm Park (http://www.mc-mncppc.org/parks/facilities/ag_farm.shtm). Nestled along Rock Creek Park in Derwood, MD, the 410 acre park has been set aside by the county to preserve historical farming practices and host seasonal festivals depicting farm life both past and present.

THE GOLF
Tournament organizer Biff Gaut took special steps to ensure a fantastic experience for all of the participants from start to finish. Biff does a fantastic job of organizing, motivating and leading. He is a big reason that the tournament has done so well in its first 3 years. Volunteers from local schools greeted the golfers as they arrived in the parking lot for check in, bags were loaded on the carts with great anticipation. Registration followed, where Lion Paul Hassler and Lion Jim Pope pitched in to help. They were selling Mulligan’s (golf’s version of the do-over) and 50/50 tickets respectively. They were relieved by Lion’s Jack Waters and Ken Twenty to handle the lunch crowd after the golf. Special thanks to Lion Tal Hughes for again sponsoring the tournament with a private donation. The Lions 50/50 pot was $660 dollars and at $10 a ticket that means 66 of the 88 golfers participated, a whopping 75%! I am also very happy to announce that the winner of the 50/50 was Lion Tim Watts.
Lion Ken Brace and his wife Diane were also present, despite moving to South Carolina the Brace’s are remarkably committed to the tournament and the charity. Ken joined Biff to emcee the awards ceremony and Diane helped with registration. Although everyone involved knows that their roles run much deeper than helping out on the day of the event. Lion Ken, as usual, was a tremendous example of the best that the Lions represent.
Great weather, great food, great people, two great causes and lots of laughs. A fantastic day for sure and we are all counting the days until next years Open.

Kids don't have to go to Camp Moss Hollow to understand its importance in the lives of those who do. After all, kids know kids. They know how much fun it is to be carefree, to skip from place to place, to spend an afternoon at the pool or sing at the top of their lungs.
And they understand that without some help, many of the campers at Moss Hollow wouldn't have that chance.
We want to tell you about some area young people who have jumped into the effort to send kids to Moss Hollow and to make sure they have the best time they can once they get there.
Tomorrow, Michael Buscemi, 14, of Rockville, and a bunch of his friends from Shady Grove Middle School are scheduled to hold a carwash to raise money for Send a Kid to Camp. So if your car needs a bath, by all means take it to College Plaza Exxon, 15211 Frederick Rd., Rockville, where you'll find Michael and his pals -- all members of the school's Leo Club-- wielding sponges and buckets.
Customers can donate whatever they think is fair, and all the money collected by the Leo Club -- a youth adjunct to the Derwood Lions Club-- will go to support campers at Moss Hollow. "The Hollow," as its campers call it, is a place designed for children who need a summer break from their often difficult lives. Many come from foster homes; some have no home at all. Others come from families that are struggling to make ends meet.
Michael, who is Leo Club president, said his mom, Karen Buscemi, has been reading our columns and suggested that Camp Moss Hollow might be a worthwhile summer project.
"Our club . . . wanted to get together for one last activity," said Michael, who is headed to Magruder High School in September.
"For these kids, camp is the highlight of their summer, and these kids are at risk on the streets of D.C."
Michael called around to see if there was a gas station that would play host to a car wash, and that's how they found College Plaza Exxon.
