Lions Working for Special Olympics

For two weeks this July, memories have come alive as Eunice Kennedy Shriver hosted Camp Shriver at her home in Potomac, Maryland, USA.

From July 9 - 27 campers with intellectual disabilities paired up with volunteers to discover the opportunities and experiences of participating in a sports camp program. Camp Shriver permitted these campers to realize their potential, develop physical fitness and experience the joys and friendships that come from camp.

Camp Shriver has been an annual event since it was started with the first Camp Shriver in 1962.  Eunice Shriver believed that people with intellectual disabilities were far more capable than commonly believed and deserving of the same opportunities and experiences as others.  So she started a summer day camp for children and adults with intellectual disabilities at Timberlawn, her home in Rockville, Maryland, to explore their capabilities in a variety of sports and physical activities.

This year, Camp Shriver was very successful again with over 200 campers and volunteers in attendance throughout the 3 weeks in July.   Lions from the Multiple District 22-C again assisted by supplying volunteers to help with the program.  The Lions ran the Kickball event which was very popular with the campers and operated the snow cones concession stand everyday for the full 15 days.  There were 24 Lions and friends from 7 different Lions Clubs ( Rockville, Montgomery Central Derwood, Laytonsville, Sandy Spring, Chevy Chase, College Park, and Greenbelt) who freely gave of their time and talents to support this very important program.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver sent her sincere thanks to the Lions, as did Dr. Tom Songster and the many intellectually challenged young people who attended the camp.
